Mrs. McGlinsey's Reading Class:

We are beginning our study of the Titanic.  We will be working with books and articles to determine the important facts about this famous ship.  We will also be looking at different accounts of the tragedy told by survivors and comparing them.

We are also looking at Point of View in both fiction and non-fiction text.  Students will learn how to determine a story's point of view as wells as compare to different accounts of the same event.

Students should be reading nightly to help improve their fluency, decoding, and comprehension. After your child has read:  Ask them to retell what has happened, share a new vocabulary word with you, give you a word to describe their character with evidence from the text proving that character trait!

Science:

This trimester we will be exploring with motion and design.  The students will be learning about how force affects a vehicles motion as well as how the design of a vehicle will affect both the speed and distance a vehicle will travel.

Our Schedule

Monday:  Art

Tuesday: Health

Wednesday: Music/PE

Thursday: PE

Friday: Library

Math:

During the month of February we were working on multiplying fractions.  Students were taught how to use a visual model, a number line, and repeated addition to help them better understand the concept.

We have begun looking at decimals (tenths and hundredths) and relating decimals as part of a whole, like a fraction!  Students will compare decimals, place and order them on a number line!

Writing:

Wow!  Writing is everywhere in room 3!

Word of the Week:  Students are given a new word of the week on Monday and are asked to find the definition, part of speech, synonym, and antonym, they then use it in a fourth grade sentence!  Throughout the week we try to use the word as much as we can!  We also look for it while we are reading!

Photo of the Day:  Every Tuesday the students are given a photograph and asked to analyze it.  They put on their binoculars and zoom into to make observations, they use their observations to make inferences and predictions.

Opinion Writing:  We have begun our lesson on opinion writing.  Students will be reading articles about a certain topic and will be picking their opinion on that topic.  They will then have to use evidence and quotes from the article to support their opinion!  Ask them their opinion on whether a cat or a dog is a better pet.  Do they think that animals should be kept in zoos?  Have them use evidence from the articles they have read!
